Type III rough side out (suede side of leather)
The U.S. Army's M-43 service shoes were adopted in 1943.
The previous model, M-42 Type II, was made of smooth leather,
This Type III has the leather surface facing inwards,
It is easy to put your feet in and out, providing excellent comfort.
The sole is made specifically for this model, with a mold made from the actual shoe.
A total of 72 nails have been hand-hammered into the soles and heels of both shoes.

The M-43 service shoes were worn by Virgil Hiltz in the film "The Great Escape."
Steve McQueen wore it with the A-2 in the movie.
