The 71st Fighter Interceptor Squadron was reorganized by the Air Defense Command in the summer of 1955 as part of "Project Arrow," a program aimed at returning to active service fighter units that had made memorable records in both world wars .

In 1957, the aircraft began upgrading to the North American F-86L Sabre, which incorporated a data link for direct communication with the then-new semi-automated ground environment or analog computer-controlled designation systems for intercept .

The 71st Fighter Interceptor Squadron continued to be the top team in U.S. air defense, using a succession of cutting-edge interceptors , including the supersonic F-102 Delta Dagger from 1958 to 1960 and the F-106 Delta Dart from 1960 to 1971 .

In 1965, the 71st Fighter Interceptor Squadron won the F-106 division at the William Tell Tactical Fighter-Interceptor Competition . The squadron also received three Presidential Unit Citations and five Outstanding Unit Awards .

This patch version complies with patch regulations under the Air Defense Corps , and what is particularly noteworthy is the large patch of the 26th Air Division, to which the unit belongs, on the back .

This is a rare patch specially ordered by pilots to commemorate their participation in "William Tell 1965."

This nameplate was specially made to match the squadron colors at the time.
