BUZZ RICKSON'S BR80686 Type A-2 “BUZZ RICKSON CLOTHING CO. CONTRACT No.18091 GOATSKIN” Military Flight Jacket

This A-2, bearing contract number AC18091, is from the second production lot of Rough Wear, a company that delivered A-2 jackets to the military on five separate occasions.

The pattern is characteristic of the company, featuring a stand collar and a design where a symmetrical body pattern—which ignored the front placket—was forcefully adapted into a placket-front configuration.

At the time, military regulations stipulated horsehide for A-2 jackets; however, perhaps due to procurement circumstances, this lot uses goatskin, which is rare for the A-2.

While goatskin is synonymous with the G-1, the quintessential leather jacket of the Navy, it has a smaller surface area per hide compared to horsehide, necessitating that the leather be cut into smaller pieces and used efficiently, as is done with the G-1.

When cutting goatskin, which has a small surface area, for a pattern like the A-2 that features a single-piece back, there are limitations on how the remaining leather can be used for other parts.

In other words, it is an extremely luxurious use of the material.

The leather used is carefully selected thick goatskin, which is tanned with vegetable tannins, base-dyed, and then finished by layering thin coats of dye to achieve the desired color, resulting in a natural, uneven tone.

The beautifully flowing vertical grain is emphasized, once again capturing the heart with the appeal of goatskin.
