TAILOR TOYO Mid 1950s Style Velveteen Souvenir Jacket “ROARING TIGER” × “WHITE EAGLE” TT15544-119 Souvenir Jacket Reversible
This mid-1950s piece features a powerful roaring tiger with bared fangs on a black velveteen base.
The muscular physique of the tiger is realistically depicted with fine, short-stitch embroidery, a feat only achievable by highly skilled craftsmen.
The ascending dragon on the sleeve is longer vertically than usual, a rare specification in vintage pieces.
The reversible side features a white eagle design on blue acetate reminiscent of a clear sky.
The number of colored threads used is kept to a minimum, with the spread wings depicted solely by stitching.
In contrast to the densely embroidered eagle, the pine branches are drawn with delicate lines that leverage the fabric color,
and the balance of negative space creates a highly artistic piece, similar to Japanese paintings.
VELVETEEN SOUVENIR JACKET
Early souvenir jackets often had reversible acetate fabric, but as a variation at the time, models using fluffy velveteen fabric also existed.
Padding was added to enhance warmth, and the acetate side of the reversible jacket featured quilting to hold the padding in place.
